Dr. Jodi Reed graduated from the University of Florida College of Veterinary Medicine in 2001 She and her husband, Jason, proudly opened Harmony Animal Hospital in May of 2009. In November 2018, they built and opened their dream hospital across the street. Veterinary Dentistry became a deep passion for Dr. Jodi since taking Dr. Brett’s extraction lab in 2007. Learning there are simple techniques and tricks to make dentistry so much easier and actually fun (most days) changed everything!! Dentistry continues to be a huge focus of the practice.

Dr. Jennifer Keaten developed a passion for veterinary dentistry first as a technician. Though she got very little training in the field of dentistry in school, her passion remained. Dr. Keaten graduated from Iowa State University College of Veterinary Medicine in 2013 with a dual master’s degree in public health that she completed in 2016. Dr. Keaten’s commitment to dentistry was able to grow after adding dental radiography to the practice and educating the staff on the importance of dentistry in veterinary medicine.

“I also want to say thank you for all you have done and are doing! You have been an amazing teacher and mentor and I am astounded at how much you have done for me, others, and our patients! You're the best!”

Dr. Calderwood grew up on a dairy farm in Crary, North Dakota. He went to school at NDSU for his Pre-Vet studies, then attended Veterinary School at Iowa State University and graduated in 1980. After graduating he started working with dairy cows in Wisconsin then moved back to North Dakota in 1984 and started working with mostly large animals. He since worked with large animal and small animal dentistry in Casselton, and now at Prairie Winds Veterinary Center. He is currently on the North Dakota Medical Board serving as their delegate to the American Veterinary Medical Association. He has also been awarded Veterinarian of the year by his peers.

“Thanks to Dr. Brett and Dr. Jodi for all the little pointers and support in this program!! My tech today did FM X-rays on this lab cross dog in 10 minutes and my part was 28 minutes from start to finish on the extraction of 208. The part I have enjoyed the most is seeing the excitement in my techs about taking X-rays and reaching their goals. Thanks all!”

Dr. Smith joined the HAH team in 2006 and became a partner of the hospital in 2016. His education includes an undergraduate degree from UVM, and a Veterinary degree from the University of Pennsylvania in 2002. Dr. Smith spent 2 years in Vermont in a small animal practice, 2 years at Roberts Animal Hospital (Hanover, MA) as an emergency veterinarian prior to moving to Cape Cod. His main focus is surgery, including orthopedics, surgical oncology, emergency, oral and reconstructive surgery. He enjoys skiing and scuba diving in his time out of the office.

“Dr. Beckman's Dentistry course provides a pathway from basic extractions to next level procedures. The lecture portion was simple and to the point, with a downloadable set of photos and slides to take home for real-life usage. The ratio of instructor to student was excellent, allowing maximum time spent for cadaver work. This course helps provide clarity to the questions of just because I can do a procedure – should I be doing this procedure. Chances are after this course – the answer is yes I can. The most useful points for me were mandibular fracture repair and restorations. A big shout out to Dr. Fuentes as well who was fantastic in his instruction.”

Things have changed a lot since I graduated with my veterinary degree from Oregon State University in 1993. These days we can have a sick pet diagnosed with full lab work, radiographs and ultrasound within a couple hours of presentation to my practice. Years ago we’d have to send lab samples out and bring radiologists in… A diagnosis could take days. Digital radiology and modern technology make it genuinely fun to practice veterinary medicine these days. I particularly enjoy surgery and dentistry, and I sincerely appreciate that Dr Beckman strives to elevate the standard of care of veterinary dentistry through education.

I am the happiest veterinarian I know. I believe I enjoy our profession so much because I’ve been involved in many aspects of medicine over the years. I spent my first 8 years as an emergency / critical care vet in Portland, Oregon. I was the founder of a small animal blood bank in the 1990s. I’ve been an associate veterinarian at several practices. I’ve started 2 house call practices. I was a relief vet for many years when I did my international work. I performed surgeries at Guide Dogs for the Blind for several years. I spent a dozen winters out of the country in undeveloped areas of the world, running spay/neuter campaigns.

Joi Sutton, DVM

I am the founder of a nonprofit called Veterinary Ventures which strives to bring sustainable health care to the less fortunate animals of the world. Running international spay/neuter campaigns in undeveloped countries was an enjoyable and interesting way to experience the world and help animals. I have set up surgery clinics in schools, churches, agricultural stations, village police huts, dive shops and other unusual venues. Dozens of vets and techs vet would follow me out of the country to help stray and owned animals. I believe I had success collecting volunteers because they figured if a nerd like me could have international adventures helping animals, so could they. For several years I wrote educational articles for pet owners on the internet. In 2013 I started my own hospital in Tequesta, Florida.

My guiding principle has always been to treat clients as I would treat my mother and to treat patients as I would treat my own pet. Starting Tequesta Vet Clinic is the pinnacle of my achievements.

Javier Fuentes, DVM

Dr. Javier M. Fuentes, originally from Colombia, attended La Salle University in Bogota where he received his Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine degree in 1992. After graduation, he completed a year-long internship in various veterinary specialties in the Colombian Amazon. There, he worked with the local community’s small animals and exotic pets. He also worked with larger, wild animals and pursued his interest in animal reproduction and surgery. Upon completion of the internship, Dr. Fuentes spent the next two years earning his MBA. These stepping stones of experience and education led to him establishing his own veterinary hospital in Bogota with his wife, Ana, who is also a veterinarian. Both of them were eager to work hand in hand in the fascinating world of small animal medicine. Concurrently, over the next few years, Dr. Fuentes embarked on yet another special interest which entailed pursuing his dream of reentering school to pursue a Masters Degree in Parasitology. Later, he earned his PhD in the same area.

He went on to become an associate professor at La Salle University, where he had previously studied, teaching the up and coming classes of future veterinarians.

Dr. Fuentes and Ana later decided to move to South Florida, searching for a more peaceful, tranquil environment to raise a family. They have two beautiful children, Nicholas and Emily, who share their parents’ love of animals. The Fuentes family shares their lives with 3 cats, Jeanne Marie, Perry, and Tata, and two dogs, Morgan and Charlie.

Dr. Fuentes has dedicated the last 19 years to obtaining professional specialized training in his interest of small animal dentistry. For the last few years, he has been a dental resident of Dr. Brett Beckman and working locally in South Florida practicing exclusively Veterinary Dentistry and Oral Surgery. He is a member of the American Veterinary Medical Association, the Foundation for Veterinary Dentistry, and the American Heartworm Association.

He spends his spare time with family, enjoys biking and volunteering at local nature centers. He has repaired the shells of injured turtles and tortoises, practiced exotic avian medicine, and other wildlife medicine.

I graduated with my Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine from Western College of Veterinary Medicine in Saskatchewan with a special interest in mixed practice and small animal dentistry in 2017. I then moved to a rural, mixed practice in Northern BC where I treated all creatures big and small. The thrill of large animal medicine, including performing equine floats, many late-night calvings and dystocias, was plentiful! After 3 years enduring the northern chill, I moved down south to the Okanagan region where I currently practice as an associate at our local companion animal emergency hospital and perform elective and dental surgeries at a day practice.

Throughout my career, I have seen first hand the benefits of providing dental care. My own feline beast, Sol, suffered from painful feline resorptive lesions. Before diagnosis, Sol's only presenting sign was overgrooming, which quickly resolved after extraction of the problem teeth. He became a lot more comfortable and his beautiful haircoat grew back. Oral health can be an unseen cause of discomfort, and with the VDP program, I am confident I can continue to provide the highest quality of dental care possible.

Katrina Barth, DVM

In my off time, I enjoy kayaking, biking and skiing. I am excited to see how the future of veterinary medicine changes for our furry patients with medical innovations and feel fortunate to have had the opportunity to take the IVDI continuing education.

“Before I went off to vet school, one of my advisors at Penn State game me the best advice…”Once you start practice, play around for a few years and find something you like that you are good at…and then do everything you can to develop that skill to make yourself valuable.” – For me, dentistry has been that skill set. Not only do I enjoy it, I love being able to provide care and comfort to our patients. Not only have I gained all the dentistry knowledge one could ask for and more from Dr. Brett and all of his teachings, I've become the expert at my practice in anesthesia due to all the extra steps I take with pain management and also thanks to the anesthesia course.”

“The virtual wet labs are a fun and convenient way to improve my extraction skills at my home operatory. It is almost as if the instructor is standing beside me teaching me every step of the way to a successful extraction on the most difficult teeth. This is as good as or better than labs in veterinary school or on the road without the travel and expense. Thanks to Dr. Beckman and team for figuring out how to make this not only virtual but real hands-on education!”

Raj Singh, DVM
